ABOUT

About me!

Growing up in Calgary, I thought I would be a veterinarian. That was before I joined band class in middle school—and realized being a vet involved more than petting cute animals. When I began taking private lessons in high school, I really discovered my passion for music. I loved collaborating with other musicians in the Calgary Youth Orchestra and the Mount Royal Conservatory’s Academy program and ended up auditioning to music school.

I chose to study at the University of British Columbia, where I completed my Bachelors and Masters of Music. At the suggestion of my music history teacher, who saw what a nerd I was, I also began learning baroque flute, and soon won a scholarship from Early Music Vancouver to study it privately. I relocated to Toronto and received an Advanced Certificate in Performance from the University of Toronto.

Since then, I am grateful to have performed across the country and internationally with ensembles including the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Red Deer Symphony, Trinity Bach Project, and my own chamber groups. I am endlessly appreciative to my teachers Kelly Zimba Lukić, Christie Reside, Mary Sullivan, and Soile Stratkauskas, and aim to be as inspiring a teacher as they were to me.

In my spare time, I channel my inner chemist into creating baked goods, with a croquembouche as my current crowning achievement.

Performer's bio:

Emily Richardson is an avid performer of flutes both early and modern. She has played with ensembles including the Red Deer Symphony, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra. Her enthusiasm for concert programming led her to form Artemisia Duo, which has been featured in concert series such as the Roedde House Museum series and the VSO Day of Music, and the Toronto Baroque Players.

Originally from Calgary, Emily completed her Bachelor and Masters degrees in modern flute performance at the University of British Columbia under the guidance of VSO principal flutist Christie Reside. She also holds an Advanced Certificate in Performance from the University of Toronto, studying with Kelly Zimba Lukić, principal flutist of the TSO.

Inspired by her love for Bach, Emily began playing the baroque flute during her Masters degree, and was awarded a scholarship in 2021 from Early Music Vancouver to learn from Victoria-based baroque flutist Soile Stratkauskas. Since then, she has performed in numerous series including the Toronto Bach Festival, North Winds Concerts, and Mount Parnassus.
